Strictly speaking Wales did have a central league before 1992 (the year the League of Wales, now Wales Premier League, was founded), but its winners were not recognized by UEFA as national champions eligible to play in European Cups, since the best clubs played in English leagues (but also in the Welsh Cup, along with some border English teams like Shrewsbury Town).
